Last night I had dinner with some old coworkers, and I felt so odd listening to them talk about their jobs… how one of them worked “80 hours a week” but loved what she did, had no regrets. I don’t even understand how that’s possible. To me, the biggest regret I could imagine having on my deathbed would be, “I spent too much time working. I didn’t spend enough time with family or friends, or meditating, or working in my garden, or traveling, or being active.” That would be the absolute worst regret to have.

Seriously, if I’m not out the door at 5pm every day, I don’t want the job. And I know I’ll never make much money, but I don’t care. Is that weird? Am I the only one who’s not super ultra career-centered?

Work is so meaningless to me. It’s a way to get money so I can do things that actually matter. I just don’t understand how it could be anything else. Yeah, it’s nice if you have a job that makes some positive impact on people in some way, which I suppose mine does, working in higher education… but honestly I just can’t muster up any passion for it. It’s an enslavement, forcing me to be here at 8am every morning if I want money to buy groceries and shit. I just don’t understand how anyone can be so passionate about that - unless they just want lots of money.

I love money as much as anyone, but I guess I’ve got a limit to what I’m willing to give up for it.

I don’t know. I just felt so out of place. But then again, that’s literally every social situation for me. Whether they’re theists, or meat-eaters, or workaholics, or obsessed with talking about their babies, or rednecks, or stuffy rich people, or artsy hipster-types… I just don’t fit in, not with anyone. I wondered if that would change when I got older, but it seems to have just gotten more pronounced. I guess the older you get, the more you’re able to define who you really are and what you stand for.

It doesn’t help my mood that yesterday afternoon I had to listen to two of my (current) coworkers describe in detail the meat-based meals they were planning for the weekend with laughing remarks of “Oh, this must be grossing you out!” and then tell me I need to have babies “early,” as if that’s even possible, seeing as I’m now 30 and another friend told me yesterday that fertility peaks at 28.

Sometimes I hate everyone and everything.

Kids, life is hard. At least make it your priority to spend it with someone(s) who really, really get you and appreciate you exactly as you are.
